w126 seat replacement
We bought a 1989 560SEL 2 weeks ago, and I've spent more time monitoring this board than sleeping. While there's still some mechanical work to do, I need to begin looking at repairing cracked and torn front leather to appease my wife. Looking at most every post with the word "seat" for the past year, I think I can safely assume that if we replace the entire seat it can be from any 126 sedan (but from stevebfl the later years were sprung better). Could we use the seats from a 140 sedan (specifically a '92 500SEL) as a replacement? How about anything newer?
Thanks in advance for any input. You all have already taught me much--FL car brought to NW Indiana--I wouldn't have known the word "monovalve" if I hadn't been reading here, let alone how to replace. Phil's great also Earl McLain LaPorte, IN '89 560SEL |

Earl,
I don't know about W140 seats, but consider that there are at least 5 varieties of US W126 seats -- manual headrest, power headrest, memory, heated and orthopedic, . I don't know if the differences are in the seat or external controllers. I'm sure my memory seats don't have heater coils or lumbar bladders. There are other variations such as upholstery material. SEC seats might be an option. Sixto 91 300SE 81 300SD |

I knew it couldn't be as simple as I thought. We have power headrest, memory and heated coils in a light grey leather. It seems that I read that the SEC seats aren't a good candidate because of the folding backs.
One of the old posts I read last night mentioned Bill H(?) who can make replacement covers and an 800 number for him, I jotted it down. World upholstery seems a bit pricey to me, at least according to their internet price list. We have time, so if we don't get lucky, I'll give Bill a ring. Thanks for your reply, Earl McLain LaPorte, IN '89 560 SEL |

I have a 1993 W124 and my experience might be helpful. My drivers seat leather was very mildly cracked, and I considered replacing the leather. I called the dealer and replacement leather was incredibly expensive, so much so that it wasn't even a consideration. The service guy at the dealer gave me the number of a shop in North Hollywood that makes replacement leather that, according to him, fits perfectly and is virtually identical in looks, quality, appearance to factory leather.
Their pricing for the seat bottom and back rest is $504.90 for the leather and $200.00 to install. Use this as a price guideline to compare. If they are cheaper, see if they'll send it to you and you can install yourself or send to a local shop. Their info is: GAHC Inc. 8116 Lankershim Blvd. North Hollywood, CA 800 722-2292 818 767-6242 In the end, my buddy who works for Mitsubishi Motors U.S.A. told me that most dealers who get lease returns on Diamante's with leather send the cars out to get redyed and they come back looking like new. Most cracks are superficial. I found a body / paint shop that does this. They have to use a special dye for leather. It's sprayed on. They charged me $100.00 for one seat, and it came out looking perfect. Like brand new. So good that I think I'll do my front passenger seat so that it'll look just as good. There is also a company on the internet, I think Leatherique.com, that sells very expensive leather car products and also sells the dye you can use for yourself and they also have a crack filler product. If you do a search, you may find it mentioned on this site. It may be in the detailing section. I think a guy redyed the leather on his steering wheel, and one guy redyed his gray leather after using Lexol preservative on the leather when it took the color off the leather. Good luck!

To Sixto--
That's the guy. We'll try local first, then get a replacement quote. Thanks for the input. To Suginami-- Good input, we've looked at leatherique's site and your experience at $100 per seat makes a look at local pro's an intelligent decision before we try to diy with $100 to $150 worth of product. Thanks for the input. Earl McLain '89 560SEL |

You could also try salvage yards for seats but condition might be a factor. I have seen plenty of used seats on ebay for various models, and those too might be options.
Though the only reason i look for seas for 126 or 124 chassis or newer benzes is to make a new computer chair for my desk. hehe Alon

Alon,
Agreed on the condition issue. Thanks. Earl P.S. I spent much of last night reading "seat posts" and have noticed you have a seemingly insatiable fixation with finding a suitable computer chair. I wish you well in your quest. Perhaps the creation of a foundation is in order. |

126 seat identification
My car has fabric& Velour seats . I'm thinking of getting the front seats redone - In order to get the original fabric I need to find a fabric ID number that I am told should be somewhere in the car.
Does anyone know where this tag could be found ? |

Hoping this might help track down fabric # http://www.amcon-luxled.com/mbcar/polster5.html . Also, I made a "rubbing" of my engine compartment build plate and keep it with my parts and repair log so I can pull it out for ordering. Dealer parts dept. should be able to decipher codes. Most complete code list I've found is on the site I referenced. http://www.amcon-luxled.com/mbcar/index.html Good luck.

thanks for introducing me to this site -never heard of it- I sent them an email with these same photos - maybe they can identify the name /code .
P.S. I was told the fabric codes are not on the body plate - but elsewhere in the car, maybe on the seat itself... |
