please help. 124 hood star replacement

Before I pull my hair out, bloody my fingers any more and take a hammer to the damn thing, why is this so complicated? I've read instructions, didn't help me at all. This was NOT complicated on the 202 chassis. There is a black metal sleeve, which I have tried to reorient, looks like I got the tiny metal tab back on and loaded the spring, but the hood star itself is flaccid and falls down! I took it off and the damn assembly fell apart again. WhY is everythign on the 124 so hard? I had the entire front fascia off the 202, the headlights, grill, bumper, and I can't figure out a 2 inch piece of metal on this thing!

Will, the tiny metal piece maintains the spring tension and holds everything in place. If you look at a picture of the mechanism you will understand how it works.

I've got it together, I'm talking now about how to actually get it seated in the grill

drop it in the hole, use a pair of channel locks to grip the metal collar.. pull down, twist 90 degrees and it should lock it down in place.

That is how I did it on my old w123 when I had it. Should be the same idea

On a related topic, there used to be a source for removable stars, does anyone recall what that source is?

Will, the spring keeps the Star seated in the grill. It's designed to collapse if something hits it. Try twisting it around a bit and the mechanism will grab and hold the Star upright.
