300e Head Replacement Sucess!! Coolant?
Thanks to all who offered me assistance and guidance thru this process. Yes I made a few rookie mistakes going thru it.(Stripping the bolt for the rotor plate into the cam: cost me a week)
Put it together last night and turned over and ran well , no smoke and fluids were clean!! Also lots of power. My idle is about 1600 rpms but I think that because I broke the little black sensor with the two vacuum lines on the top, front of the head. Question I put plain water to start it up but want to flush the cooling system. Any suggested way to do this and also recommended antifreeze for 300e. TIA Mike V |
Here we go with the antifreeze wars. I think the best insurance is a gallon of MB antifreeze from your MB dealer. Since you just got through working through this job, I expect $12 for a gallon of antifreeze as insurance might be palletable(sp?).

Mike:
Drain the water from the block and radiator and refill with a mix of Shout! (from local grocer) and water. The Shout is an excellent de-greaser and doesn't foam -- works quite well and run it thru for a few minutes, then drain, then repeat with plain water and drain again. Use MB coolant as MikeV recommended -- might as well since you've come this far. Make sure you fill entire block by removing the 14mm bolt next to the oil dipstick (there's 2 of them side by side -- I use the one closest to cabin). When coolant starts to overflow from this hole, screw bolt back in and finish filling radiator. Good luck and nice work! ~Paul ___________________ '91 300E, 206k miles |
