No fuel 1995 S420
I replaced the battery on my S420 that was sitting for awhile. I tried starting but it was obvious that I was not getting any fuel. My gauge read empty. I went to station and purchased hi-test 6 gallons. Put in to tank and still no fuel on the gauge. I had my boss crank and sprayed a little flamable brake cleaner. Started right up and died.. If I tried spraying, it ran. I wonder if the fuel pump does double duty as in telling me how much fuel is in the tank and supplying said fuel to injectors. If the pump is bad does that mean dropping tank to get at it or is available to the underside. I am used to diesels so bare with my stupidity. Thank you

I'm not too familiar with the W140. But I am pretty sure the pumps are not tank mounted, and have nothing to do with the gas gauge. They are independent systems. Your gas tank could be "gunked" up, or the pumps could have simply failed. There is also a fuel pump relay that can fail, and will prevent power from reaching the pumps (more likely). Do you hear the pumps running at all when you first turn the key?

Turn the key and nothing electric coming on. It is not sending fuel and the gauge is also not moving.

Check the fuel pump relays, there might be 2 on your car. They will be in the engine bay. If you figure out which pins are power you can effectively "jumper" the connections to see if the fuel pumps kick on. It sounds like your fuel gauge is bad, or the sender is bad, bad ground for instrument cluster. They are separate issues.

Curbill, I have a V-8 just as you. However the worst thing to do was to spray anything into your hot-wire air mass while the wire is hot/ignition turn to on. If the wire inside the MAF get damage/ break you can kiss that unit goodbye and buy a new air mass sensor.
You truly need to scan the codes to get a starting point. On the V-8 several things can cause your problem. Without the codes your are shooting in the wind and wasting time. Goto another one of the best website on the planet to help you JimF site http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_S500.html Good luck keep us posted. |
