Reasonable Repair Costs?
I have a 1992 500SL and have been going to the same dealer for service and repairs for years.
On my last visit it turns out that I needed (1) brake rotors and pads on all four wheels, (2) a blower fan regulator, fan and the bracket supporting these parts and (3) a new belt and belt sentioner. The tab for this work came to $3,200. Assuming all this work needed to be done, is this a reasonable cost? JR |
That seems extremely high. The parts alone will run between $700-$850 depending where you get them. Dealer prices shouldn't exceed $1200-$1300. Which leaves about $2K for labor.
Considering that the regulator and tensioner are very easy to change on this model and the brake job is like any other car I can't imagine $2k for labor. What exactly was the breakdown (labor, parts)? Vin |
Is this a MB dealer? Based on the building/facility that our local dealer has it looks like they probably have a pretty high overhead - beautiful, well laid out facility covering quite a few acres of premium real estate. Places like that are not cheap to build and maintain. Wonder how much of your cost went toward maintaining the facility? If it is a dealer I would start looking for a good, reputable independent.

I'll take that back. I didn't realize they replaced the Blower assembly as well. $522 sounds about right for a dealer. However, I'm confused on the additional motor. Maybe that's a typo and is supposed to be the regulator.
Parts prices set aside, the labor seems very high. $705 for a brake job. What did they do? Rebuild the calipers. Shouldn't take more than 2 hours to change rotors and pads. Next time find a good independent and order the parts from Mercedesshop. Vin |

Parts prices set aside, the labor seems very high. $705 for a brake job. >> There are many dealer having labor rates above $100. $705 labor for brake cost is not unheard of. I spotted a front brake job on my 1987 300TD by the previous owner at a MB dealer and the labor was $348. The description for that was install front pads and turn rotors. |

There are many dealer having labor rates above $100. >> Is that per hour? If we go by book it's 1.6 hours to change front rotors and 2.2 for rears. That's only 3.8 hours. Even if you add another 2 hours for pads (which would be ridiculous), that's a total 5.8 hours. Depending on labor rates I can't understand anything more than $300-$400 (low), $400-$500 (high end). After all, they are only replacing parts. They are not rebuilding or resurfacing any of the parts. Vin |
Thanks for the feedback.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good independent in San Francisco? jr |

Is that per hour? >> Yes, that is per hour. Many of the Chicago dealer are near, at. or above that. I have never owned an SL but I heard the flat hours on these models are high. |
