The top unscrews, takes a standard oil filter wrench.

It's buried in there. It needs a cap wrench. Working from memory I believe it's a 74mm-14 flute cap. A 76mm-14 flute (more popularly found at the store) cap should fit. The cap wrench attaches to a 3/8" drive socket wrench. $3 and I've been using it for 9 years.

rosenfe, recommend buying the proper tool from your local MB dealer. At least make the effort to price the tool at your local MB dealer because the cost is likely not much more than a tool made in China. The MB tool is high quality with an exact fit. I have been using one for 12 years.

Coincidently--mine was delivered from Samstag yesterday. It's one of those tools that looks like overkill, but nearly worthy of display with the family pictures. Seriously, since i'm using it to take off a permanent part instead of a disposable filter, i feel better using the 14 flute tool and knowing it's right.

The $6 tool from autozone is a perfect fit, why over think this?
