Home recovery of R12?

It seems my 260E's compressor has gone and I think it is going to be difficult to find someone who will be able to recover the R12 locally and hold it for me while I replace the compressor.

Is there a cheap way to store it at home? I have a professional grade vacuum pump that has what looks like an attachment to recover.
And no I am not switching to r134a...I just backconverted to R12 to get away from that junk.

Any ideas, is it possible cheaply?

I have a r12 recovery unit, the cylinder looks like a propane bottle with refrigerant valves attached.

I dont know if a regular vac pump can actually store r12, I was alway under the assumption that they were strictly for pump down.

Recovery equipment is big, expensive, and not really easy to use.

You might be cheaper with giving away your r12, and just buying fresh cans on fleabay.

Or you could just use propane. It's cheap, and even more efficient the R12. Like for like quanitiy.

Some people (including myself) are real snobby when it comes to refrigerant. Personally, I would never use propane, but to each their own.

I have had to evac and recharge my car a couple of times during the course of my ac repair/ rebuild. I would recommend replacing all the ac parts that you havent changed yet, then pump down, recharge, and be done with it.

I have more cans of R12....I just wanted to "attempt" at being environmentally friendly rather than just letting it vent.

I did not mean vac pump to store, I mean it looks like it has an adapter that hooks up to something else such as a storage device?

Straight propane is comparable to R22... which has pressures too high for an R12 system.
