In my quest for knowledge...what is...
Hey guys. First off, what is the throttle body? Second, where is it on a 92 300E? Is it that valve looking thing underneat the airfilter in the air box. And finally, anyone know what type of fuel injection my car has?

The valve looking thing is the air flow sensor plate. The throttle body is beneath it. I believe you have the CIS system on your car.

Wait a sec. Is the CIS system the type of injection? Or the engine manegment system? And what does CIS stand for? Central injection system?

CIS=Continuous or Constant (pick the one you like) injection system. It is part of engine management, but not all.

Oh ok. But then, how does the car actually inject the fuel? Is it throttle body injection?

No, each cylinder has it's own injector. Throttle body controls air flow only.

Ok thanks. So a big bore throttle body would be pretty easy to install then... :D

I'm not sure what you mean by "big bore" TB. Where would you get this item and how would you integrate into the rest of the systems involved with engine management? There are easier ways to fine extra horsepower in mid displacement 6 cylinder engines. If you did manage to get a "big bore", you would need a different intake manifold, a different cam to take advantage of increased air flow, different fuel management systems to make the extra air more burnable than stock. Get the picture ;) ;) . Believe me when I tell you just slapping on a larger piece of pipe is not a workable solution for you. Get yourself an SL500:D :D

hehehe... its all part of the plan. Bekkers sells the big bore, which was to go on with a supercharger and new cams and of course a new adjustable CIS-E manegment system with integrated laptop. Is this all gonna happen, in a word...NO! But hey, its still winter break... and for some reason I like finding things that I can't afford to make my car faster... call me a ghe[TT]o hacker without a cause!

FWIW, I believe your car has Bosch KE-5 Jetronic fuel injection.

I belive you can put a bigger Throttle Body,with in reason with no other mods. The engine management system should adjust to the higher volume of air. Just as it compensates For different altitudes.
Would it be better with different cam, exhaust, and injectors? Yes, but by itself it will probably give a 15 hp increase. It`s done all the time. John |
Hey thanks for the info on the engine manegment. Since the car has a jetronic, I belive I can adapt the 16 valve fuel enrichment add-on to work with the 300E. That in conjunction with a bigger throttle body should yeild a decent improvement in HP. Also, if the car does indeed have a jetronic, all the controversy about if the car can acutally be "chipped" or not should end now. Since the unit does control the fuel and air intake, a chip would work on this car, not sure how much hp one can gain, but the idea of increasing hp by tweaking the chip in a m103 is definetaly feasable.

Chip not really applicable...
My $0.02:
Just because it's called a "Jetronic" system doesn't necessarily mean it can be chipped. In this case the fuel injection system is Bosch KE5-Jetronic...which at the core is a mechanical fuel injection system. Bosch added the EHA, controlled by an ECU, to fine tune the mixture for emissions reasons, but aftermarket firms figured out that it could also be used to enrich the mixture with an external control. Also, the ignition system is completely separate with it's own controller, so in order to "chip" this engine to make more power, a completely separate third computer would be needed to enrich the fuel system AND control spark according to a new 'map'...that is why there is no chip for these engines. |
