CL55 no throttle.... P0120

I'm thinking about buying a 2001 CL55. the car is in mint condition, starts/runs great but the throttle is completely broken. Engine only mildly revs when the peddle is to the floor. the code is P0120 which is the accelerator position sensor. The dealer seems to think that's all the problem is. What do you guys think? Anyone else experience a similar problem?

Why hasn't the car been fixed?
And you realize that codes are just diagnostic there are times when a code will pinpoint a problem but many times a codes is just a chain to a series of events.

CL 55 is an expensive car with pricey repair bills - are you feeling lucky enough to take a chance and can you afford to?

Well, he said it "Just" happened, but this is a dealer talking. He said he'd get it fixed over the next week but I want to see if I should just give up on it now or wait a week.

I'd pass - a car like that I would think if it were a given throttle issue they would have fixed it - that way the car would sell quickly.

They may be using a technique that by having you as the reason for the dealership to perform the repair and seeing if your willing to wait they are baiting you into the sale.

Even if the car comes with some type of warranty this throttle issue just goes to show that issues will occur with the car and that repairs may not be done quickly.

Is it a MB dealer?

CL 55 that is a nice car but a very complicated car - composite body panels, brake disc and pads are priced as a 180mph coupe with world class braking would be priced, is that a supercharged engine? listen the SLR came with a 5.5 supercharged engine and that car was half-a-million dollars car. And the car depreciates.

And you have to have an independent top shop foreman type tech go over the car before the sale and not at the dealership selling the car unless you know better.

Use the Buy Parts link at this site to gauge parts pricing for the car and tire rack for tire prices.

The more I think about this the more I say don't even consider this car.

A 2001 is going to be the naturally aspirated 5.4L engine - same drivetrain as the 210 E55. Should be a rock solid 350HP.

I'm not too familiar with the 215 chassis. I'd look into the suspension - not sure if this car is ADS, ABC, airmatic, or what. Do some research and learn the common failure points and costs. It may have a significant cost of ownership.

Well, they are replacing the accelerator pedal today, so that's a good sign. We'll see what happens from there. The car is basically an AMG'd S class coupe, It does have a lot of bells and whistles including ABC and those damn windows that need to roll down a half inch before the door opens. Things can get expensive but I've had good experiences with early 2000 S classes so I'm willing to gamble. This car is MINT and VERY well priced. Almost too good to be true, usually is... :o If the throttle is fixed and the car drives like it should, I have to buy it. I'll keep ya'll updated.
