netting on the back of the front seats

Hello Everyone,

I was not quite sure how to pose my quirey in the search, so I
hope most will understand the subject. My 1988 300E has netting
affixed on the back of the front seats. The netting appears to be
affixed from the inside seat where the screw protrudes out from
the seat instead of into it.

My problem is that the screw(s) that affix the netting have come
loose. And now I need to remove the back panel of the front seat
in order to re-attach the netting. Has anyone come across this
problem? How do you remove the rear panel?

Thank you all in advance,

bluebenz:)

A little more detail

Greetings BlueBenz,

I'm sure your '88 isn't much different than my '86 so here's how you do it. Remove the two screws on the bottom of the plastic panel, as mentioned. You will then need to remove the upolstery seams from the back panel. To do this without tearing things up start at the bottom of the plastic panel and insert a screwdriver gently into the lower groove and just get the upolstery bead to start peeking out and roll it in an upward fashion to remove it from the right side. Once the tension is released from one side the removal for the opposite side is pretty easy. To put it all back, once again the one side will be easy but the other will require you to pull the vinyl toward you with pretty good force to get the strip and the vinyl back into it's groove. Having someone sitting in the seat and applying backward pressure when you do this will definitely make it a lot easier.

Just did this exact job on my 300E. Charles has pretty much summed it all up nicely. The only things I could add would be that there are three metal clips on each side which help to hold the rim of the back panel in place - one at the bottom, one in the middle and one in the top. If you start removing the panel from the bottom (which you should), you will require a good bit on initial force to pry free the first clip. Once you do, you'll see how the whole thing fits together and should have no problem with the rest of it. The tip about having someone sit in the seat during re-installation is very helpful!

When I was removing mine I noticed a kind of indentation or button about 2/3 of the way up on the back of the panel, slightly to the left when you look at the back of the seat. It pushes in but doesn't seem to do anything. Did anyone else notice this? What does it do? It is present on both seats. Just curious...

That button is probably the release button for the headrests.

Yeah, those are the buttons to release the headrest. Should you need to remove the headrest completely, you would have to push in these "hidden" release buttons.

before i found this website, i went to my dealer
to have my net and plastic brace that holds it replaced.
it cost me $100.00 parts and labor.

Ah! I didn't think of touching the headrests. Makes sense though...thanks!

My nets and retainers need replacing. Anyone know of a supplier other than a dealer?

jbaj007 01-08-2002 11:25 AM

Nets are generally OK, it's the elastic of the top cord that gets old. I removed my frame and net and rethreaded some 1/4" black shock cord (using the old crimp retainers) and it was as good as new. Worth a try.
