Battery Size 95 E320

Would a battery from a 87 Wagon work on the 95 Wagon?

maybe. i have seen some wagons with the larger battery like the '87 diesel - it's a group 49 - and some have a smaller tray and take a group 48.

hmm... I hope it's the same. My current will work on the other wagon for another year. wont keep working in mine much longer

Yes they're the same battery tray and the same size battery fits fine.

Ran into problems.. Battery is completely different. The '95 is about 1/2 the size

They had 2 sized batteries, they are interchangeable. The larger one fills the tray and is preferred of course, but there is a smaller one which will work fine, just not "optimum". Originally the car probably had the smaller one, which was held towards the inside of the battery tray with a metal wedge sort of thing. Later the larger one was probably installed, the wedge is removed and the "big" battery would then fill the whole tray.
In a pinch you could just trust the battery hold-down to hold the small battery in place, or you could just cut a piece of 2X4 to act as a temporary wedge. The battery cables should work fine with either battery.
I used to have a few of those wedges (the official part) around somewhere.

One of my '94s had a smaller battery, the other '94 and my '95 had the group 49.

A larger battery will be just fine, especially with the large capacity alternator of the '95.

Our 1995 E320's battery is smaller than the tray with a hold-down plate. Difficult to imagine any MB design where the battery simply sits in the battery tray without being secured in some manner.

I did some research and it looks like the bigger battery won't hurt at all. Thats awesome know that the group 49s can go in everything.

The metal wedge is just to keep the smaller battery from shifting in the tray. With either size there is still the same hold-down on the front edge of the tray, as the width and height are the same.
