engine stalled then started then stalled again
 

i have a 94 200 te s124 (m111 engine). it has been quite reliable. all i ever did on the car were a few minor repairs, usual oil changes and tune ups, and replacement of consumable parts such as brake pads. its wiring harness has been replaced way back.

the engine suddenly stopped on the way home tonight. all dash lights suddenly turned on as the engine stalled. it cranks but will not start. the fuel pump buzzes when the ignition is turned so i guess fuel delivery is ok. just as i was about to call a tow truck after 15 mins of trying to make it start, it started. i took the car home which once again did not want to start immediately after i turned the engine off. i waited a few minutes then it started again.

i am perplexed and a bit wary to drive the car to the shop since it may likely suddenly just stop. would appreciate suggestions from fellow enthusiast on where to begin. thanks in advance.

Problem solved. The shop eventually traced the problem to the crank position sensor needing replacement - internal windings apparently intermittently open perhaps due to old age.
