Snow chains
 

I have just been given a pair of Mercedes-Benz brand snow chains by a colleague who has traded his E320 Coupe for a Lexus 4x4 (don't ask). They are described on the packaging as being suitable for the following tyres:

185-14
195/70-14
195/65-15
205/60-15

I know that his E320 had 16" wheels from new, fitted, I think, with 205/55 R16 or 225/50 R16 tyres.

So, question is, will these chains fit the 17" AMG alloys on my W202? Rear tyre size is 245/40ZR17. I expect they will not.

I would not even try it. With that much rubber I would not try to fit chains on. IMHO
I was thinking about chains on my W126 as I have brand new all seasons and it might be reassuring to have the option. Feel free to email me if you want to sell them.

You don't really have to ask, just try it. Either they will fit or they won't. The only decision would be if they are too big, but they you can always shorten them of secure the extra part.

I would not try it with the wider tires as it is not like trying on a set of tires. If they do rub the fenders it will not just take off a bit of undercoating, but will shread the fender!:eek: I would be careful! You could check if it fits the tires easy enough but I would not want to check fender clearance by just trying, I think it is smart to ask.

You should use much caution with chains that are not size specific. In addition to tearing up your wheelwell and fender they can become wrapped around the driveshaft going to the wheel - major heartburn to remove and lucky if no damage is caused. I have a set of Security Chain Co. 'Z' chains specific for 195/65/15 and they fit very nicely and are quite good.

I think I'll give these a miss. It hardly ever snows here sufficiently badly to warrant chains anyway. I'm going to give them to a friend who has a 1981 500SL in Zurich: they'll fit his tyres and his need is undoubtedly greater than mine.
