HELP - Loud Squeak- 300E
 

I've never heard a squeak like this.

1993 300E - Coming from the front drivers side Shock (tower) is a loud squeak

noise . I get it when I turn the wheels either direction (L or R ) . Just started

2-3days ago. First I thought power steering (fluid ) issue..

Fluids are ok level. So I have my son turn the wheel while I'm looking under the front wheel and this is w/o doubt coming from the shock .

This sounds loud like a loud rusty gate ...It also happens when I push down on the front fender ...

I'm guessing time for new shocks up front but does anyone have a more precise idea what this is .

My Benz sounds like a 40 yr old pickup truck that's been sitting for 30 yrs in the rain!!

Well if you're sure the noise is coming from the strut area, it may well be time to replace the struts and mounts. However, often squeaks on turning the steering wheel side to side are the result of bad ball joints.

Cal..it really sounds like it's coming from the shock .

I dont think there is an upper ball joint and if there was it would still be coming from the middle of the two....

I would vote for ball joint, since i did that very job this weekend. I had to put my ear right on the lower ball joint to be sure where it was coming from and still it was a bit difficult to figure out...
My squeak was prominent 90-95% when turning the wheel left or right and i would get a squeak by pushing down on the bumper. It was so loud people would look at me in the parking lots!
I am now just waiting for delivery of a proper bolt and nut for the pinch clamp to get me back on the road.

Ball Joint.

An immediate albeit temporary "fix" is to punch a small hole into the boot and spray in some Wirth/Wurth(?) or similar lubricant like lithium grease.

sounds more like a ball joint to me...

a liberal spray of lithium grease my help you isolate it or temporarily eliminate it...

I to have the ole squeaks in the drivers corner. I read the posts and tried something along those lines with a twist..I used an awl to poke the hole in the joint boot then filled my chainsaw oiler,(you know? That little plunger tool for oiling the bar tip wheel...) Filled it with a good lube, inserted it into the hole, pumped till it puffed oh so slightly, turned the wheels several times back n forth and taa daa. Believe it or not it worked. I am squeak free and loving it. Oh happy day...:)

same thing with me....except my boot is ripped so I'm using hi temp grease

Could be the sway bar rubbers.

Known to dry out and squeak when going over bumps, cobbled roads or when turning.

Cheap and easy to replace.
