() 4matic ABS on the blink

My ABS does the low-speed shudder/shimmy, which most advice on here seems to suggest the wheel speed sensor is either malfunctioning or it cant read the magnetic signal from the reluctor.

Took it to my indie, he took out the right side shaft, and examined the condition of the reluctor's teeth (which is on the outer end of the front axle shaft assembly, not the hub). He basically said the ring is too badly corroded/rusty to allow the sensor to pickup the signal. He showed it to me and I guess I'd agree it was pretty nasty looking. I told him just to clean it up as best possible and I'd think about it as to what I would do next. He seemed to think it would be best to find fresh axles.

So my question is does anyone know if the old 4matic reluctor ring is replaceable by itself, or do I need a complete shaft (ouch$$$$) just to fix this?

My other option is to explore a way to put the ABS offline altogether, which would of course take out the 4matic also, but it hasn't worked in years anyway. Does anyone know how to do that?

Thanks

Try cleaning the ABS sensor seat. This is usually a symptom of less than good ground connection to the ABS sensor.
