w201 Steering Sloppy..

starting to anger me a bit...

I've replaced the tie rods in August, they were bad.

Whats the next likely suspect ?

The FSM indicates 25mm acceptable play..I'm fairly certain I've got way more than that. I can pretty much (with the motion of the wrist) move the wheel back and forth and the car is slow to respond...

Maybe its time to reseal/rebuild the steering box? Its got 224k on it now.

Maybe drag/center link?
I think a steering box rebuild like you said would be the most rewarding.

How's the alignment?

I don't remember if the W201 has them, but what's the condition of the steering couplers?

With the engine stopped and the key in the on position (so the steering wheel is not locked) you need to get under the car and observe what's happening while someone else rocks the steering wheel back and forth.

A common problem would be the Idler Arm Bushing. If the IAB is the problem, the part is available on this site. While it's apart, many people like to reverse the bolt so it's easier to access next time.

I would also consider replacing the steering dampner:

http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1988-Mercedes--Benz-190e--.3-Steering&yearid=1988%40%401988&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&modelid=6129%3AED|10000009%3ASM|846%3AMBC|1485%40%40190E+2.3&catid=241580%40%40Steering&subcatid=241641@@Steering+Damper&mode=PD

It's a $50 part and when I replaced it on our 94 E320 (at 150K) - it made a huge difference in the steering feel; much less "slop".
