Mercedes 300E muffler recommendation

Hey Guys,

The rear muffler on my '87 300E has gotten a small hole in it:(, and I'm going to replace it. I've looked on several different parts websites (including this one) which offer excellent prices on different brands such as Bosal, Eberspacher and Ansa. Are any of these brands good? They all seem to be within the $160-200 mark which isn't too bad.

Thanks!

Have you considered Timevalve? I have no opinion of them. I'm just throwing it here for consideration.

Thanks Kestas, I've heard of timevalve, but can't seem to open up their homepage no matter what I do, so getting prices and stuff seems impossible.

We used to sell Bosal exhausts at Napa (they were a step up from Walker) and they were of good quality. I have a relatively new Walker (from PO) on my 300E and it is on the loud side. Doesn't bother me at all but it's not whisper quiet like it should be.

Only the Eberspacher is OE quality.

I have Eberspacher and would recommend.

I've had Bosal and was not happy with the sound.

+1 for the Eberspracher. It's worth the marginal cost premium.

Thanks for the replies all! I think i'll go with the eberspacher

This.

I had a Bosal rot off an E23 BMW as it is just cheaply built like Ansa. I dropped the coin on my Eberspacher for the 300SEL.

Also, drive the car until it gets hot... this will blow/boil the water out of the exhaust system to prevent it from rusting out.

When I replaced mine a few years ago, I hit it with some stove paint before I had it installed. 3 years later, almost no surface rust yet!

Have you ever replaced the resonator(middle muffler)?

Thanks for the suggestion. the replacement muffler I have is now 7 years and 70,000 miles old, and I drive almost 50 miles every day of pure highway driving. I don't know what brand the original was replaced with, but I guess it wasn't eberspacher, or it would have lasted longer.

Yes, at the same time that this now rusted-out muffler was installed, 7 years and 70,000 miles ago. That looks to be in good shape.

That sounds like pretty good length of time on them! I don't know if you can get stainless or not on the Mercedes? I kind of got out of the exhaust issues with the 240D. It still has original exhaust on it.

Back in April of last year when I purchased my one owner 1990 300SE with 62k miles on the clock, it still had its original Factory exhaust. It's a Southern Florida car and has been its whole life. The middle muffler had 1" diameter hole in it and the rear muffler was getting there. Since they lasted nearly 20 years it was a no-brainer to go with OEM replacements by Eberspacher.
