W124 Fuel Tank Cap Stuck

I was going to fill up the wagon with petrol and the fuel tank cap was so tight it would not twist. Went home got a pair of pliers and was able to twist it, but now it would not come off. After sometime, the cap came off. I thought it was a defective cap so I bought a new one and now, it's stuck again. Any insights?

Cheers.

Is it the ratcheting kind, or just a simple cap? The ratcheting ones (e.g. on the W210) have a penchant for getting caught on the fill pipe, for whatever reason, and the best solution is to just replace with the simple cap.

Mine is the aluminum version that ratchets. There is plastic version and I'll try that next when I get this cap off. Any easy way of doing this? I think I just got lucky the first time.

Cheers.

The same thing happens to my friends cap. She uses a plastic one, What she did is to buy and replaced her old cap, That was pretty strange that same thing happens to your new cap?

cleavster, the proper fuel filler cap for a 124 car doesn't ratchet. You must have the wrong cap.

When you break the seal, do you hear any vacuum?

That's my experience with the earlier W124s, i.e. 1988s in my case.

Did the caps change by '95?

lkchris, our 1995 E-Class car has the same gas cap as our 1991 and 1992 E-Class cars.

If you have an old cap, you will notice two sliding mechanisms. One is to get the cap to bite on the fill neck, and another (pinkish color) goes around this first mechanism I think to seal it properly.

When the second one is not in sync with the first one, then the cap cannot be removed. Not sure why this happens, but since it has happened on our 300TE I can only guess why.
