SLS pump removal/installation proceedure.

I am looking for the proper removal/install proceedure for the SLS pump on a 1988 560SEC. I have the repair kit already. I could probably just wing it but would rather it were done by the book.

Does anyone have some thoughts? Thanks!

David

That job is fairly simple, unbolt the lines & then the bolts on the pump.

I figured it wasn't that difficult. Can't explain why they wanted $1800 including labor. I was wondering if you needed to remove the water pump or the power steering, etc. Gonna give it a go over the next long weekend.

Bought myself the service manual too.

Let us know how it goes. Mine is leaking, so it need to come out. Was told it could be the lines, but that is clearly not the case.

Well I have to seals. Anyone attempted a go at one of these to replace the o-rings and shaft seal? Any thoughts on how-to? I figure for $15 it is worth the shot since a replacement SLS pump is $1k.....

Potomac German Auto has a unit on ebay for @ $200 I've bought from them & they seem to know their stuff.
Replacing major SLS components with new @ dealer prices parts makes little sense - to me at least. Not when Bilsteins with H&R lowering springs all around can be had for less than a pair of hydraulic struts.

There's no market differences between a 420 & 560's that I've noticed, despite the better engine too. So I'm not that inclined to preserve a $3K rear(only) suspension setup.

What else needs to come off before removal of the SLS pump? Can it really be that straight-forward?

I'd like to get started over the long weekend.

Thanks again.

I am leaking fluid all over the place. It's coming from the pump so I just ordered a seal kit from George Murphy (mentioned in another thread). He said he will send instructions with it. From what he said over the phone it is pretty straight forward. He did mention to use wood chop stick to remove the old seals so as not to scratch anything. He said if you scratch anything, you may ruin the pump.
