Exhaust noise from manifold gasket?
Hi again
I was wondring, whay are signs of an exhuast manifold gasket problem? recen;ty my car has been making loud exhuast noise when cold. It sounds like a leak in the exhuast but when it warms up the sound goes away. Someone told me that the gasket is flexible due to temp readings so that when it get warm, the exhuast manifold gasket seals better and when it's cold, it doesn't seal as well hence the noise. I know it can't be a cracked namifold or anuthing else cracked because the noise would be constant. Thanks guys,

That sounds like a bad exhaust mani gasket. When the engine warms up, materials expand.
When it's cold, pop the hood and listen -- have someone rev it a bit. You should be able to isolate it. Do you hear a ticking as if it's valve-train racket? Sometimes, the car can make a chugging noise when at cold at idle. These are my experiences... Good luck! |

I had a '77 280SE that had a split exhaust manifold. It had the same problem but I couldn't find which section was leaking.
I finally used a short piece of garden hose and held one end close (but not on) the manifold area and the other to my ear. I moved it back and forth and quickly found the area of leakage. I should also forewarn you to not put the hose right-up to your ear as it was VERY loud. Give it a try. |
