Transmission Noise - W202
Hi All,
I have a 1998 C200 MANUAL transmission. I just had the clutch and flywheel replaced and now it's making an almost grating/juddering sound when using engine braking. It's most noticeable when shifting from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd. The noise is only apparrent when the clutch is partially engaged. So if I lift my foot and hold it before the clutch is totally engaged then the sound is there. Once the clutch is fully engaged or fully released the noise is not there. Needless to say I took it back to the mechanic who worked on it and he thinks it's in the gearbox and not because of the clutch/ flywheel that he worked on... His reason is because it doesn't seem to make the noise when shifting from 5th down to 4th in the same circumstances. He thinks this is of significance because 4th is a 'direct drive' gear and may not have the same symptoms as the other gears? He says if it was the clutch/ flywheel then it would make the noise in 4th too. Can anyone help out with some ideas with what it could be. If I can go back to him with a theory as to why I think it is the clutch/ flywheel then I may be able to convince him to pull the transmission out again to check there workmenship... Thanks, Jason |
