Best "Grippyness" Brake Pads

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get some opinions of the collective here.

Whats the best grippy/grabby brake pads? For my 190E 3.0

I've got PBR Metal Masters on the front E420 calipers and Textars on the back 500E calipers..

I think the PBRs are more grabby than the Textars but what else is out there thats awesome stuff?

I know theres some ridiculously expensive stuff out there too, I'm not looking for that.

Thanks Guys!

I've got new stock rotors with Axxis/PBR Ceramic pads all around for the last 50K or so. Ceramics don't generate brake dust, and are very quiet. They hold to up very hard canyon/track driving without issue. If you buy from the right place they are only a bit more expensive than the MetalMasters.

I've got ATE rotors on, the've only got like 10k on them or so. I wonder if I could just switch the pads..

When I first got the car, it has Axxis Ultimates on it. I havent been able to find them though..The brakes were much more awesome than they are now. I've been trying to get back to that...

You should be fine. I still don't have any perceptible grooves on my rotors after 50K of real abuse.

Sorry. I actually have Akebono Ceramics, I couldn't remember. Either the PBR/Axxiss or Akebono should be exactly the same as far as performance.

Hawk HPS is a top performer for the street. They're a ferrocarbon pad. Excellent braking performance with pretty easy rotor wear. Looks like they're only available for the front wheels for the W201, but those are the wheels that count.

I can offer this testimonial for Hawk HPS pads: I was approaching Milwaukee's downtown freeway interchange last summer in heavy traffic and slipped into a lane behind a semi at about 50 mph. Just as I completed the lane change the trucker braked hard -- I saw the tires on his trailer's tandem wheels smoke when they locked up.

I hit the binders too, and got instant and dramatic response. The Hawk pads and Conti Extreme Contact DWS tires saved me from a collision that day.

I had the best stopping power with Jurids on my 300E. Some of the guys recommend a brand that Mercedes used on the original and is still available but it escapes me right now (I'll try those next). I put new rotors and Akebono brakes on my front last time but still no comparison to the Jurid brakes after seating and wearing in.

I've got E420 Calipers in the front and SL600/E500 calipers in the rear.

I had Textars in the front/rear for a while. Switched to PBR MM's in the front, belt better but not amazing. My 420SEL has amazing brakes. Lots of bite. Idk what pads it has though..

So Jurid, Akebono, Axxis, Hawk

The Axxis and Hawks are priced similarly 40-60/set

I did some reading on Axxis vs Hawk and the OP commented how the Jurid's had the best initial bite of all of them, but he was shifting towards Hawks due to dusting issues.

I can't seem to find the Jurid's anywhere for the E420 calipers...

JamesDean is right....those other pads are Textars. Suppose to be really good pads and OEM. BTW...I didn't have too much brake dust with the Jurids over anything else I've seen.

I've used Textar pads too -- they're better performers than Pagid, certainly. A very adequate pad.

Like a lot of performance brake pads, Hawks need a little warmup before they really show their stuff. They're also engineered to respond to hard use. So I can see the point about initial bite. If you're mostly driving at city/suburban speeds on short trips the Textars may be the way to go.

If you drive in a "spirited" manner on twisty roads or autocross, or if you find yourself standing on the brake pedal with a semitrailer looming in front of you, Hawks will have the edge. My opinion, anyway.

BTW. The Hawks are not a dust-free pad. They are a lot harder than Jurids and Pagids, so they dust less than OE, but the wheels still get black.
