Right only 92-94. Here are the ones affected. Chassis end number ranges.

B712 630 to B999 997

C000 004 to C178 406

F231 627 to F307 938

I see it on alldata showing up as a safety recall though 95-0223.

mb says my car was not part of any recall / campaign but it sure had the wiring harness problem right at the injectors as Gilly says. you touched one and it would start stumbling and running rough, another touch would smoothen it temporarily. a new harness took care of the problem. i was a 2nd owner and dealers won't even talk about courtesy fixes if you're not the original owner. and BTW my problem manifested when i had the head gasket fixed - when they put the top back together it just ran very rough.

mb may be a classy car but MBUSA has no class in dealing with these problems.

A classy MBUSA? You must be dreaming.

MBUSA dos not know the existance of any problems in any Mercedes-Benz cars. The cars MBUSA sells are so perfect that there are no recalls on any of them unless forced by the Feds and EPA.

I'm sorry if anyone took my question about MB-USA the wrong way. It is only because I heard of people in this forum that have experienced the harness problem on years before 1992 that had me questioning MB-USA's integrity.

I guess it all boils down to personal experiences by each individual. Personally, I'm not going to just take MB-USA's word for it, that is why I participate in this great site, because of the honesty and great support that many people here give us all.

Anyway, buying a car on the internet has turned out to be quite difficult for me. I spent the last week talking to the owner of this car and he he assured me that the car was great and that I could take it to any mechanic I wanted for an inspection.

I called a Mercedes Benz Authorized Dealer made the arrangements and paid them for a 2.8 hour inspection only to find out that the car needs a lot of work. The dealer's estimate was approximately $10,000 and would not stop criticizing the car.

The purchase inspection has about 150 different things they look at. They said a 1990 Mercedes usually needs a lot of work because it is too old and it;s normal for a car like this to be in this condition. The car has 100,000 miles.

They tried very hard to sell me a signature series car, but I didn't bite.

Anyway, I'm not going to buy the car and I think I'll look for a different car alltogether. I've had enough bad experiences with Mercedes for now. I'm just going to take a break. I've always lovedMercedes growing up and have the utmost respect for their engineering and their terrific lineup of special cars, but I'm not having the greatest luck. I'll watch you guys enjoy your precious toys and maybe the next car after this will be a Mercedes.

I always tell everyone what great cars Mercedes are and they keep saying, well why is it that yours always needs to be fixed.
The other choices left now, are Lexus LS 400 ( the only one from Japan that I'm interested in) or a BMW.

Please nobody take this the wrong way. This is only my experience and opinion and I'm just looking for reliability and I'm basing my decisions based on my past experiences and some research. I've always owned BMWs and maybe I was lucky, but I never had to repair them that often and the reputation of the Lexus LS 400 seems to be very impressive.

The only other thing I think I could do is buy a W123 280e or 280ce , but I don't feel like going that old right now.

Decisions, decisions...

naturally all vehicles require repair due to wear and tear (engineering issues aside)

usage and maintence history of a vehicle probably play the largest role in a vehicles condition ...regardless of make or model

I think I'm a little bitter, because I've already spent over $500 looking for a car and haven't found the right one yet, not to mention all the time. It's like a full time job!

I think I won't buy a car that does not have full service history, and I will review it myself before making any decisions.

Just today, I called a Nissan dealer who has a 1992 500SEL for sale for about $11,000, who said the mileage on the car was approx. 63,000 miles. The car is black on black and shows well.
After a call to Mercedes Benz, I discovered that the car was serviced in May 1988 and had 117,000 miles. I'm getting sick and tired of these people trying to screw me.

LS400 is a good car - but you won't have as much fun tracking down these gremlins. Take a look at the club Lexus forum and see what they talk about....

Looks like a Lexus LS 400 is out of the question. Apparently, a fuse is all it takes to stop the odometer...

I'm beginning to get very suspicious of everything these days. The more I read, the more things I find out that make me take a step back.

Believe it or not, in a lot of cars you can just pull a fuse and it stops the odometer from counting the mileage, but don't let the scare you away. Use carfax as a GUIDE not as something that guarantees the mileage, i know of many cars with turned back odometers and no carfax alert on them. I think you should still consider the benzo, if not go back to a bimmer. They're both GREAT cars and have there up's and down's.

This e320 you looked at, did it look really clean for its age, yet it needed 10k in repairs supposedly? Or did it look pretty roughed up?

Since you paid for it, it would be worthwhile publishing here a list of what the dealer said the car needed for the $10k. This may not represent a lot of expense for the DIY crowd if it includes $8k in labor and $2k of parts at MB markup. The dealer may replace all the bushings, ball joints, valve seals, etc, that contribute to a like-new feeling for any car THEY will sell, because they don't want a purchaser to feel like they purchased a 'used' car. Using this same standard, most any used car you buy can be made to feel like new, at a price.

The experience of driving an MB, whether 'like new' or with a developed personality, is why most of us are here. If you notice the inherent MB character of the vehicle, you understand it is something that you can't get with a Honda or Toyota. If you just want a comfortable car, either of the latter are fine, reliable, non-descript transportation.

Um, just so everyone is clear, the ONLY official MB wiring harness SAFETY RECALL refers to wiring running under the carpeting in the passenger footwell. The metal plate under the carpeting has a little foot piece that can chafe this wiring, which include the harness for the airbag system. The remedy is to reposition the wiring and to put some padding around this metal tab.

This is for 94-95 E320s.

The info is all there on ALLDATA.com

The real shame is that the possibility of an engine fire (3 of which have been reported to the NHTSA.gov site) due to severely defective 93-95 M104 engine harnesses is not reason enough for MBUSA to issue a similar safety recall. Why there is a difference between chafing and overheating defective insulation is not clear to me.

The problem also effects the M119 V8 of the same years, documented in this very forum.

MBUSA, a class act indeed.
