LOOK under the Accelerator Pedal

Is there an Electric (Depress-able at Wide Open Throttle) "Kick Down" switch?
It MAY be Bad.
Unplug it's two prong electrical connection [Gently,it's been there a long time]
and see if upshift difficulty goes away.

M.B.s of the era - W126, W124, W201, started from rest in second gear. First gear was comparatively low and only comes into play if your tramp hard on the accelerator pedal or manually shift the lever.

Also the engines were high reving. 100ks per hour is generally around 3000 revs.

Agree.

If the kickdown switch were jammed closed, wouldn't that also cause a first gear start?

OP said 2nd then 3rd, then no fourth.

Might try accelerating again, paying close attention to whether it slips into first gear, even if only momentarily.

for more details: i did change my engine, and after engine swap 4th doesent work. with my previous engine was problem that 4th shifted late, like i drove on high way and 4th shifted after 1km-1.5km (1mile)

dexron is correct for that trans. disconnect the kickdown cable at the throttle linkage and drive it. could be the cable's too tight and won't allow it into 4th. good luck, chuck.

i disconnected the cable- nothing happened.
i was thinking, could the thing where kickdown cable and vacuum hoses goes in (on the side of transmission), could that be out of business?

that thing just delays the 2/3 upshift when vacuum is applied to it during warm up.

can you pull the cable and hear a clunk in the trans? could be the cable is bound up in the housing and can't relax. don't know what else means no 4th unless it's an internal fluid problem. wrong pressure, valve body stuck, i don't know. good luck, chuck.

question, that stick (kick down stick ) does it have to be as out as it can be?
because when i put valve body back on the tranny then that "leaver" holds it like half way in, and also it doesent go totally in (4-5milli meters(0.196850inch) is out) eaven when someone thightened cable under bonnet with hand.

you've gone someplace i've not been before. the times i've fought trans issues i can count on 1 hand and it was either the switch, solenoid or both. nothing internal. and i've not seen everything. good luck, chuck.
