1994 e320 air pump...bypass it???

My air pump makes some odd noises when the car warms up and then quiet. Not sure if this is normal or not but I thought about bypassing it and running a shorter belt? Good idea or not? Does anyone know the belt to use if one bypasses the pump?

Lots of posts on this same subject, other members have succesfully bypassed it. Do a search !!

You can bypass it so long as you don't have a visual part to your emissions inspection.

Did a search but didn't find any info on the length of the new shorter belt I would need . I'll try another search

Try this thread.....

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/261264-smog-pump-removed.html?highlight=smog+pump

By the way, the smog pump can also be disabled by simply removing the magnetic clutch disc on the front of the pump. To do this insert allen key in front of shaft to prevent shaft from turning, then use wrench to remove nut on front of pump. When magnet is signaled to engage, pump internals will not turn because the internal shaft will not magnetically clamp to the serp belt pulley drive..... This method does require a functional pulley bearing.

(you will still pass a visual smog inspection but you didn't hear that from me.....)

From my personally archived notes:

"FOR MY 1994 E320: I have had it replaced to Belt 6PK2415 from 6PK2145

According to the parts supplier the european version of the car didn't have a smog pump, and that I would have to remove the entire pump and then remove the pulley so that it would not rub in the way of the "NEW" belt path.

Mercedes Benz Part Number: 011-994-47-92
Generic Part Number: 6PK2415"

You will also need to block off the EGR valve, and associated vacuum tubing. A freeze plug of some sort will also be required for the EGR tube into the cylinder head.

i have had a problem with the belt squeeling really bad.. i replaced the belt with the dayco 6kp2360 and still have the problem. it's 93" and not the 95" that yours is.... it seems to be too loose. what do you think i should do? the tensioner seems fine after i tested it.
