Mercedes benz 500SE 1984
My Mercedes benz 500SE 1984 Engine is now worn out and I have decided to get another engine. Is there any difference if I get a 500SE 1991 engine or later. Will there be any modifications to be made ie on gearbox, flywheel etc?. i will really appreciate any help.

1991 is pretty much the last year to go with. After that, it will be the M119 engine which is completely different.
Another option is to rebuild what you have.

the easy way to go with that is to find a good 560 engine and fit it with the intake off the 500.[suggest rebuilding the intake while off]

Exactly; get yourself a 560 engine. More power, same mpg, and cheap because they are everywhere.

I think you need to put valve guides and seals in the 500 euro and enjoy it. I am saying this because my 500SEL US version actually has a euro 500 engine that has just as much power as any 560 I have driven and gets 20 mpg on road trips and even better if I can drive it 80 mph or better. From what I have read on this site, 17 to 18 mpg is about tops for the 560. Another thing, the 84 and 85 (maybe others) use regular gas.
Why do you think you need a rebuild? The 117 engine is bullet proof except for the timing chain breaking and the valve guides wearing out. Paul
