300E 24V Manual Conversion using 2.5 16V parts
So I have a 300E 24V 3.4 AMG but it's an automatic.
Anyway, I want to convert it to a manual, which is not the hardest thing but all info is very limited on this as I have not found any solid info on this. So, as I possibly have chance of getting a whole manual conversion from a 190E 2.5 16V, I know the dogleg Getrag fits, but as for the shifter assembly, pedal set, driveshaft, flywheel .. etc etc I don't have clue... The engine in my car is just a tuned M104.980 so it would be exactly like converting a stock 300E 24V. All help appreciated -Axel |

Easy swap, I've done this myself but with a 3.6 engine. The getrag will bolt up no problem and you can use the gear lever and pedal box from the 190, the linkage rods will need altering in length to suit the w124 but will fit ok. I altered the auto crossmember to mount the getrag but there is a correct fitting one from a w???. The front section of the propshaft will need to be swaped for a slightly longer one from a manual w124, but the 16v might also fit ok? Your biggest problem is the flywheel, the 16v one cannot be used because it dosent have the correct pickup points for the cps sensor. The only flywheel that will work is the early "single mass" flywheel from a 190e 2.6, and they are as rare as hens teeth to find used. I ended up ordering a new one from mercedes in germany simply cos I couldnt find one! The starter solinoid wire will need to be joined at the gearbox plug and thats it.
It makes a differant animal out of it!

Depending upon what you are trying to accomplish, be aware that the Getrag box 5th gear ratio is probably the same as your auto trans 4th. A 2.6 W201 or 3.0 liter W124 manual box has its 4th same as the automatic's, 5th is overdrive which gives it rather long legs. Either shifter is not built for speed shifting, so don't expect short throws unless you modify the linkage.
Either way, it becomes a completely different car from the automatic.
