A/C quandry
89 300TE a/c performs beautifully for 15 - 20 minutes then the compressor shuts off, will not restart until I turn the motor off and then back on, low side pressure is between 35-40psi. I have replaced the pressure switch and the fan pressure switch. Could it be the speed sensor on the back of the compressor, or is my compressor on its last leg?????????

could be a bad belt and/or tensioner. any slipping makes the compressor THINK it's not running and shuts it off. good luck, chuck.

Sure, couple of ideas.
Check the compressor clutch air gap using feeler guages (like for gapping spark plugs or setting valve clearance). The gap should be ~0.50mm. Experience says that once it reaches ~0.80mm the cluch will slip enough on engagement to trigger to compressor cutout circuit. The gap can be adjusted by pulling the clutch plate and removing/changing spacers. Clean the compressor clutch. Use simple green or carb cleaner, or whatever. Goal is to make sure no oil or grease is on the friction surface. This can sometimes reduce slipping on engagement enough to keep things running. Also, use the search feature of the board to dig up old threads discussing this kind of problem - there are many. There are some other possible causes, but the above two are the easiest to check. |
