steering play

I have had my steering box replaced on my 73 450 sl, and still there is a little bit of play; about 1/2 inch. I know this is within specs, but it still bugs me. When the box was replaced, the coupling bushings were also replaced, but is this the same as replacing the entire coupling? Could replacing the entire coupling make a difference? I've had the steering box adjusted, and the front end checked out by a couple of different mechanics, and everyone says everything is ok. Isn't there any way to get all the play out?

Changing the bushings is sufficient, no need to change the coulper unless the coupler itself was damaged. You want to have a little play in the wheel otherwise you'd be all over the road with the slightest touch of the wheel.

You have the correct play in your steering.
This is not like a rack and pinion setup where there is no play.

You have to live with it. It is there on older BMW's and American cars too. Any car with a recirculating ball steering box will have this characteristic play.
