OK, what is the secret... rear window regulator 2002 CLK320 Cabriolet
 

to removing the rear window regulator on a 2002 CLK320 Cabriolet?

Wifey called to say the left rear window will only go down, not up. Said it made a "pop" sound and stopped closing. I immediately pegged it as the plastic slider on the regulator. When I had the chance I pulled the panel and could see the broken piece but could not figure out how to pull the regulator. I was able to align the broken piece, which allowed the window to close (the slider would twist and stop the window as the slider tried to pass through a "tunnel".

Looking at the replacement regulators on Fastlane gives me the impression the regulator has to come out from the top. Are the torx or allen screws near the top of the inner panel the retaining bolts for the regulator?

Just looking for a bit of guidance so I can prepare for a regulator replacement soon. Weather is perfect for some top down driving but I don't feel like having to guide the window back up everytime SWMBO wants the top down.

That vintage the regulators are usually held in by huge rivets, not screws.

You need to take off that black looking bracket with 4 scews off first , the bracket that the seal rests on, then you take the glass out the top after another 4 screws removed

Does the REGULATOR being held in place with rivets sound right though? He needs to get the regulator out to try to fix it. I'm not sure if they sell the slider piece on this type, it's probably similar to a 210, on those I don't think they sell any individual parts except probably the regulator itself or the motor itself.

I could not locate any repair parts for this regulator, it appears I'll have to replace. I did find several posts from a different board making reference to slightly modifying a 124 (??) slider and installing it, but not sure it is suitable for this application. The only replacement/repair parts I did find where a complete regulator with motor.

This car is black on black so all of the panels and parts are, well, black. I didn't notice any brackets that stood out different. It might be the upper inside portion you are refering to, that might be where I saw the torx or allen screws. I will have to gut that side again when I get time and take a second look. There was definitely no way the regulator would come out the tiny access hole at the bottom on the panel ;).
