86 300E
A friend of mine has a 86 300E and the ac compressor is making some noise and the clutch turns all the time, even when the ac is turned off. Is the compressor locked up or what is the problem?

Its probably trashed by now, the clutch is stuck in the on position.
You can re- adjust it by removing the outer clutch plate, and adding shims.

The ac doesnt work so how do I add shims? Is there a post that shows how to do this? I just want to get to where it doesnt make any more noise for her, she doesnt care if the ac works or not.

Well it is different then when in the past you could just cut the belt and run. You might be able to procure a serpentine belt that would work and allow you to bypass the AC. FastLane might be able to give you the right belt. Another pretty low cost way would be to get a used compressor from the "Pick and Pull' and install it. Not to difficult if you don't care if the AC is operative.

Driving the car on ramps would help. The "shims" are basically little washers that will fall out when that front plate comes off. I dont know if you could leave the plate off, or find and appropriate washer.
