W202 Fuel Gauge Sending Unit.....Location?
 

The W202's with the saddle fuel tank, where is the fuel gauge sending unit located? Does one side have the fuel pump and the other have the sending unit or how is it set up. I have a 95 C220 that the fuel gauge has now stopped working totally and I am looking to repair it. With the price of parts I want to make sure I order that right part.

there's 1 on each side and you have to replace both of them. the reason is mb updated things and an old 1 won't work properly with a new 1. the logic behind 2 is the fuel gauge averages both sides. you need a special tool to remove the ring nut on each side to replace the senders. good luck, chuck.

You do not need to replace both senders if one has gone bad. There is a wiring kit that needs to be spliced into the harness when installing a new sensor(s). The difference is the plug connection. You need to make that change even if you do both sensors.

I recently replaced the left side sensor on my 1995 C280. Make sure the tank is down. The lock ring can be rolled off by tapping with a hammer and a brass punch.

Vince can I ask how you knew the left side sending unit went bad, or a way to determine which side of the sending units are faulty on my car?

I took them both out and checked them. It is a PITA, but that is the only way to manipulate the float and check the resistance of the unit. I can't remember what the resistance is supposed to be. I have the 202 CD but it won't run on the latest Windows update so I can't access it for you. My guess is one of them will make sense and one won't. On mine the problem was in the connection between the resistance winding and the pins on the plug connection. There was an open. Kinda weird since it is all encased in plastic.
