EGR Valve 83 500 SEC

Decade history of borderline pass fail
Car sat with old owner & gets little use by me.

Tweaked by smog this time. Tech suggested EGR valve

So can I clean mine?
Check its vacumn hose lines
Anything I can do
Scrounge the junkyard for a low mileage EGR.

I want to do what I can as it was suggested the EGR valve costs $500?

Help

With the engine running, if you can pull vacuum on the EGR valve? does the engines running change? ROUGH.

What readings were borderline?

What does pull vacumn on the EGR v mean?
Take off vacumn hose?

I woul;d suspect that would have been easy for Mr MB to do.

In 2009 it failed NO on 25 mph
O2 sensor was changed in 2009 about 500 miles on it currently
2009 passed NO after new O2 sensor was installed
So the O2 sensor it would seems really cleared the NO
but in that same retest the HC was right at the MAX so they almost doubled on the retest & I don't know why

Current smog was again close on the NO

The current HC levels passed borderline

Chart below compares ppm over last 2 smogs

2011 pass
test rpm co2-02 /HC Max Avg Meas NO max av meas
15 1422 13.8 1.1 122 45 (78 HC meas) 1074 434 (1057 NO meas) close P
25 1373 13.7 1.0 95 33 (55 HC meas) 904 357 (889 NO meas) close P

2009 pass after O2
15 1363 14.9 0 122 45 (122 HC meas) 1074 434 (75 NO meas)
25 1352 15 0 95 33 (95 HC meas) 904 357 (65 NO meas)

2009 fail
15 1340 14.7 .5 122 45 (66 HC meas) 1074 434 (977 NO meas) P
25 1340 14.7 .5 95 33 (55 HC meas) 904 357 (1001 NO meas) F

So current Smog was borderline on the NO again.
O2 sensor couldn't go bad with 500 miles on it?

If its the EGR & they can be cleaned I'll try that
or pull one out of the junkyard.

Vaccumn rubber line to EGR is old & hard
I did try to change all the vac lines I could but could not get the rubber off the EGR.

any advise is appreciated

Thanks
