bad vibration in revers
The other day when I was pulling out of my parking spot I stepped on the accelerator a little to hard for reverse and all of a sudden the whole engine/transmission shaft began vibraing violently. It felt worse than say, when your back wheels are slipping in gravel. But the vibration came from somewhere in the mid/front of the car. What can this be? If this helps, i noticed that lately I have had to pull the shifter lower when engaging into Drive. It doesnt engage unless I pull it about a little above the middle of D and 3. Subman tells me this is because of a worn bushing in the gearbox. I wanna get others opnions on this and the vibration in reverse. Thanks.

I have no idea of what kind of car you have but sounds like the classic tranny failure symptoms when the B3 friction disks are badly worn or disintegrating.

Ok you have a 722.3xx series tranny. A classic failure symptom.

should i be looking to replace the whole transmission, or certain parts? i want to get an idea of what to plan for when/if my transmission goes. Maybe I can drop a better transmission in it. Basically, if you were to replace the transmission what would you do to enhance the performance of it? Thanks.

Im not sure what you mean by "enhance its performance". I would not even try to change its performance. I would have the tranny rebuilt to factory specs. Replace whatever parts are necessary. The vibration generated by your tranny is an indication that there are hard parts making contact with each other internally. This is very bad and gets expensive. Only the soft or friction parts are designed to make contact with each other. So there are some serious problems that will only get worse. The firction parts are relatively inexpensive but hard parts get costly fast.
If I were you I would have it looked at ASAP. I would plan for 2-3k dollars to have it fixed. It could be less if you are blessed. Either have it rebuilt by a competent rebuilder or exhcange it for a factory MB rebuilt unit.

I replaced the transmission in my 89 190e 2.6. I think they are fairly similar cars as far as the engine and tranny go. I found a quailty salvage tranny for $850 with 30k miles. Pull the engine and transmission out at the same time and swap out the tranny. Took me the better part of a weekend to do. I spent one day pulling the engine and tranny and the next day installing it. Fairly straight forward job with a copy of the engine manual. No special tools needed besides a torque wrech and some hex sockets.
However, try changing the fluid first if you have not already done so. My old tranny did the same thing and would usually get better with a fluid and filter change.

thanks for the input. Ill try flushing the fluids this week to see if it will help any. And then i think ill take it to my mechanic and ask him to inspect the transmission. Maybe nothing severe has to be done at this point. Thanks again.
