94 S320 Evaporator
Looking for advice on Evaporator replacement. Dealer in Tampa wants $ 3500 . Anybody have other local shops in Tampa that I can visit? Or are there any other solutions that I can investigate?
Look forward to your feedback. |
here's an alternate idea
check this link: http://www.cryochem.com/CRYOseal.html
Their Cryoseal product is supposed to seal evaporator leaks without loacating the leak(s)! Have not tried this stuff, don't know what it costs but it surely will beat $3500. |
For that amount of money it might be worth a trip to Gainesville. We could save you at least a grand. OR you could call Maik Tessman at German Motorcars there in Tampa and I bet he will offer similar savings.
OR My partner is about 4 months into trying some of that stopleak in his S420. So far it has at least drastically slowed the leak. The jury is still out on this repair in the technical forums I follow. |
I know two W140 owners that have tried the CryoSeal. One is working perfectly, with no leak whatsoever. The other is still leaking, but a slower rate.
Is there anything to lose? If it doesn't work, I can't see it mucking-up the repair in any way. If Steve can do an evaporator in a W140 for $2500, that's a good price. And I doubt there are too many people around more knowledgable about MB AC systems. |
I don't know how far you are from Steve's shop but if I were you I'd be sorely tempted to bite the bullet and let him do the job. I had mine done a year ago and it's nice to have the piece of mind that it's done for good (assuming you replace the aluminum evaporator with a copper one.)
I have read that some techs will NOT be thrilled to work on a vehicle which has had CryoSeal installed in it, should it not work. There is apparently a concern about the stuff contaminating the R134a which is sucked out of the system for recycling. |
that evap thing is a crap shoot in my opinion...I have heard about those sealers btu no one seems to know if thats a fix at all...an considering the complexity of the job its almost worth paying a dealer..just in case you have to go back to the MB zone rep to make the situation right(as I have before)...and considering the fact that my car has had the evap done twice(both at MB dealers!!!)...I think the job is 28 hours of labor and a $645.00 part

Just love this picture stuff.
I thought I would throw out this picture that gives a "feel" to the work necessary. |
That "felt" really painful, Steve!! ;)
Definitely one way to shut down anyone griping about the 28 hrs...try THAT at home!! |
That MB designer should be !@#t.
|
someone correct me if I am wrong....but I thought the only cars that had evap problems were the 140's car?.......Does anyone know if MB has solved the problem?
my car has had this done twice...once with the first owner of the car...and once while under my ownership(warranty)...I think the job was 28 hours and $645 part...about $2700 as I recall Warren 1992 300SD Columbus Ohio |
Steve
Once you get to where you have it shown in the picture replacement of the evap is a piece of cake :) |
try this set of pics . . .
but make sure you haven't eaten anything in the last 3 hours! :)
http://people.ne.mediaone.net/fmulone/140/W140.html Michael, I'd be on Steve's doorstep. He made you an offer you can't refuse! |
Well,
I guess changing the blower motor on the old 108s wasn't so bad after all !!! |

It took me four hours just to get this far replacing vacuum elemets on a 300 E. The evaporator was still WAY down in there. I hope I never have to see it!!

And here is all I had to remove. I'd have to really psych myself up for an evaporator!!
