Update/Tip on Motor Mount Bolt-HELP!

First of all, thank you to everyone who had a suggestion on how to remove the driver's side motor mount bolt on a W124 1991 300E. I got everything from worming a socket between the manifold spacing to "hire someone to do it".

I figured I'd give it a try. Went out and bought a 17mm stubby open wrench; jacked up and stabilized the car; removed the plastic shield under the engine; soaked the bolt with penetrating spray and was able to COMFORTABLY fit a 17mm socket and stubby socket wrench on the bolt and remove it. I was very surprised to say the least. Wheel lug nuts have been more difficult.

So for all you future W124 motor mount changers...go at the driver's side mount from under the car with a stubby socket wrench or stubby box wrench. I couldn't even SEE the bolt from above the mount.

Good Luck
Nick

Just checked the manual on replacing engine mounts and it shows accessing the top bolt from under the vehicle in the diagram but doesn't show or say that you should. Does say to remove fan shroud and watch the hoses when raising the front of the engine. Thanks for the update!

Most common way is to use a 17mm stubby wrench. Some are strong enough to use just the wrench, others use a pry bar on the wrench against something solid. I am not strong enough to do this so whenever I can I try to use a socket and breaker bar.

You won't be able to get a socket thru the gap in the manifold. I put the socket on the bolt from below and dropped a 1/4" extension down to it. You need a 1/4" extension, a 3/8" won't fit.
