service reset

What do you do when your service reset does not work?
Ignore it?
Go to expensive dealer?
Cut the wires to it?

Ignoring it would be easiest. I'd keep trying though. Look up the different ways to do it. I'm sure you can get it reset. Try not clenching your jaw, I always had my best luck with positive thoughts and pressing my head to the steering wheel.

The most complex systems can fail in the simplest way.

The biggest variable seems to be when you start holding the button down for the reset.
What seemed to work, is to get in and close the door. Key On. Call up FSS (push reset button a couple times). Once it is diplaying FSS info, HOLD the button down. Key off and back on and keep holding until it resets.

Any chance the dome light is switched off because the door jamb switch is broke? If the door jamb switch on the drivers door is broke it won't reset.

Just for kicks turn the dome light back to the "door" position to make sure it's working correctly. Seriously, it will NOT reset unless the door is closed, and the only way the car knows the door is closed is the door switch.

The main variation seems to be when to start holding the button (as opposed to pressing it a couple times).
The official instruction say to turn the ignition switch to off (after calling up the FSS), THEN hold the button down and turn the key back to ON.

What usually worked best for me, is to call up FSS, THEN hold the button down, then turn the ignition to OFF (keep holding the button down), then back to ON and wait the 10 or so seconds.

Try it both ways, but be sure the door switch is working, had a few of them we couldn't reset and trouble was found to be the door switch. Especially in a case like yours where the dome is switched off, you wouldn't know if the switch is bad or not if it is switched off. One would wonder why it is switched off to begin with, probably because the switch is broke! Just sayin.......

I have an E320 and i have a dickens of a time. I read, with interest, on one of
the other MB forums that the car should be asleep, ie door closed so that all
the convenience features are off. So interior lights off, instrument display off
after powering down....etc before you begin the button pushing.

Don't know what else to offer if you have tried it the few different ways I mentioned. Did you check the owners manual to see if they offer some other way of doing it? Some people have a hard time with it, and I sort of think some cars are harder to do than others.
If there is a dealer nearby maybe you could ask if one of the techs would try resetting it? The dealers aren't ALL bad.
It's a case where I wish the car was here in my driveway so I could try it.
