What is this device on the suction line?

1986 420SEL

Please help me understand what this does. Two (refrigerant?) lines branch off the suction line; one goes under the engine air cleaner, the other back under the firewall.

Thanks for any help.

Fuel cooler on the return fuel line, keeps from dumping hot fuel back into the tank.
