Transmission underside cover

Hi All,

I need to access the transmission for two jobs, checking/replacing the speedo pulse transmitter as well as replacing the shifter bushings. I see lots of folks talking about doing the latter.

Working on my 1981 380SL automatic.

I've been under to take a pre-cursor look. Am I right in assuming that I need to remove the 8-12 bolts that hold on a rather large cover that protects the transmission body? It looks like you pretty well cannot do anything without taking that off.

Just want to confirm before I start unbolting the thing. I don't see anyone talking about removing the cover when instructing how to replace bushings.

Thanks.
Eric

I've done shifter bushings on 1991 300CE and 2000 C280, and they are on the linkage between the tang of the shifter to the tranny. The one on the tang is done on the car and other one you can do on the bench after you remove the linkage.

Sorry if i wasn't clear. I confirming that the transmission cover needs to be removed.

Not for shifter bushings (at least for the w124 and w202). There are 2 and are both visible without removing anything.

I just looked at the shifter bushing parts at an online parts dealer and they look similar. The clip is the same.

Perhaps I'm beating a dead horse here, sorry for belaboring this.

I'm don't mean to remove actual part of the transmission itself. This is more like a rock-guard that shields the transmission and linkage area. To me it looks like all this needs to come off before linkage and bushings can be accessed.

I gotta take a picture.

the 107/sl has that plate that no other benz has. about 10 bolts and it has to come off to do anything to the trans, linkage bushings included. good luck, chuck.
