1995 w124 e420 shakes and chokes when warm.
I have a 1995 E420 W/O ASR.
When Cold, It starts perfect, no shaking, its just fine, I take off with the car and once it starts warming up, it starts to shake a little, but after like 10 mins, it starts to really stall, till it eventually dies, and then I want to start it again and it chokes and wont start. wiring harness has been replaced I have inspected maf harness and its fine. any ideas where I should start. I took it to 2 shops and said it was the maf. Thanks for all your suggestions. MBV8. |
Typical symptons of Distributor caps and rotors going bad....
A bad MAF will throw a code.... Sometimes it is just funny how the "shop" start telling you what the problem is (conclusions) without even looking at the codes... If the MAF is bad you will get a code 4 at pin 4 of the Diagnostic Socket... If you do not know what I am talking about, do a search on "How to read codes" and "how to build the code reader" |
Okay,
I think it is the MAF, because I get Code number 4, I attached a picture. Is it possible to replace the MAF without removing the Intake manifold? I also noticed the distributor caps are cracked, should I replace them. I am going to do a major tune up on it ( wires , Spark plugs, Even though The wires seem to be in good condition, and they are in original Mercedes Benz. And I cannot seem to find the rotors. Thanks for the feedback. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/e...s/P1130919.jpg |
Wrong pin 4. He's talking about code 4 / pin 4 on the 38 pin. If your distributors are cracked that's a great prospect to be your problem.
|
If the LED blinks 4 times means something is wrong in the air injection system. It does not necessarily means the MAF is bad.
You need to check pin 4 on the 38 pin connector, to see what codes you get. Do not replace the MAF until absolutely sure. Replace cracked distributor caps. |
Why does this car have the 8-pin diagnostic plug with LED? Was that standard on this engine in 1995? I thought that was only on California version cars before about 1990.
|
I think all 124.034s had it, ancillary to the 38 pin. All it does is add the built in LED to the 38 pin.

Let me know what you find.
I have been chasing the same symptoms for almost 2 years and over 6,000 dollars later. search for my post
"hesitation stumbling on acceleration....STILL" for all the things I have had done. |

Hello Everyone, Ok So I changed The distributors caps and rotors. The old distributor caps, looked humid, like if water was there, then I remembered My car did not have the plastic covers, that covered the wires and caps, and I used to clean the engine with high pressure water. Well I got the covers now, Ill post some pictures so you guys can judge. Thanks By the way, where is the 38 pin connector located?? |
|
I'd say you were due. The 38 pin is under the black cover on the passenger side rear of the engine compartment, visable in the upper left of your first picture. Take out 4 allen bolts, lift the cover and you'll find the 38 pin and the control modules. You'll need to build the code reader to pull the codes.

Did your issues went away with new dist caps and rotors?, because the old ones certainly look like crap.....
The location of the 38 pin connector is in the attached picture.....under the cap. |
Okay, so here is the story, It looks like my problems are solved, I drove the car for 45 mins, and no problems, My car has always runned very well, and very smooth. I really hope this is the solution to this subject. I will keep doing a major tune up, and will see why the check engine light is on.
I ran the Carfax on my car, and noticed that the airflow meter was replaced by Mercedes in 2008, Any Idea what is the lifespan of the airflow meter. My car is running fine, but I want to be prepared. Thanks for your replies. |
That's good. Non-ASR cars are usually something simple. Hot wire mass airflow sensors are ridiculously durable, unlike their hot film counterparts. It's unlikely that it even needed to be replaced in 2008, but rather just cleaned. In any case the replacement should be good for the life of the car.
