Or just bring this one to an end - it looks like [with local labor rates] it's not worthwhile doing the repair [folks with better facilities might come to a different conclusion]
Looks like the next iteration of this will be over on the 'cars' section. |

Without the space and ability to fix it I would agree selling it is the best choice. At least around here there would be a choice of at least 50 different used transmissions for around $100, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to buy and fix.

Upullit type yards sell transmissions for under $100. There are transmission guys who cruise the yards and grab good transmissions. Call a few yards and ask if they can put you in touch with such a person. You may get a good tranny for a couple hundred bucks, maybe not. The same guy may install it for you.
That said, I wouldn't go near a 300K mile NYC car or NJ car. |

Unless she's your hobby, move on. Parting out may be your best option, if you have the time, room and inclination. Otherwise get the scoop on the rebuild and sell it to someone who wants to have the work done.

Hey,
Food for thought, I had my tranny rebuilt at least 6 years ago by H&H in Amityville. The total was $1800, rebuilt not used, and I've put about 60K on it without a single problem so far. Don't Crush it!!

hello,
i am not an expert, but have experienced complete loss of forward gear with my300E. if you have some spare time, do some research on the B2 piston, and B2(brake) band which are both in charge of forward gear. the b2 brake band is adjustable, with different sized "dogbones" which can be ordered from your nearest MB dealer for 3-4 bucks. MY GUESS: you mentioned in your initial post that the car has 300,000 miles on it, perhaps the B2 band has worn out, and is out of spec. if thats the case, its possible that all you would need to buy is a new larger B2 band "dogbone" . replacement is pretty simple, but will require at least a couple hours, depending on your working conditions. good luck |
