Question air conditioner conversion?

I have a 1973 450 sl, with some air conditioner hose leaks. One mechanic has advised to stay with the r12 system, and another has advised to convert to r134. Any thoughts on this? Also, I've gotten estimates to replace the hoses and receiver-drier of from about $1,000 to $1,700. What should I expect to pay? Thanks
