Trunk Won't Open - HELP!! 2001 S430

Hello -

I am a newbie and I need some help from the experts. Money is tight at my house so we can't afford to go to the shop and hubby is pretty good at fixing things with a little help.

I have a 2001 S430. Last Saturday when I went to open the trunk with the remote I heard a loud sound I had never heard before as the lid popped open. Maybe like a vacumn deflating or a pop noise or something. It was hard to tell as I was in a parking lot. I put my items in the trunk and closed the lid. When I got home, the lid would not open.

We have replaced the fuse - that's not it. Any clue where else to look?

TIA

Do you have the operators manual? If I am not mistaken there should be a procedure in the manual for opening it.

Yes, I have the manual. I can get into the truck using the metal part of the key, but I need to find a way to use the remote or door release for a long term solution.

It operates on vacuum. There's a thin hose running froa vacuum pump to a diaphragm actuator. The actuator is probably defective and can be repalced. I don't know your specific model, so that's about as much detail as I can give.

Your car has an independent unit.

The hydraulic trunk opening/closing system was an option. Most 220's have the pneumatic system. The simplest way to diagnose the problem would be to remove the inner deck-lid liner (very easy) and look for something broken.
