07 S550 wipers inoperative

Went through the troubleshooting procedure and found the drivers side wiper motor inoperative. Pulled it out and removed the plastic cover and found what is shown in the picture. Note all the "debris" on the center shaft of the large gear. Something in there seems to be magnitized drawing metal(?) to it. I believe the debris came out of the motor. Has anyone else ever seen this?

It might be magnetized on purpose to keep the rest of the system clean. Certainly looks like it.....impressive if it is.

After two new wiper motors (~$300/ea) everything is back to normal. I would have thought for that cost they would have lasted longer than 5 years.
