performance exhaust 300ce
im looking to get opinions about enhancing the exhaust output on 1989 300ce,i see there is a double pipe into cat.would it make sense to increase tube size into a single 2.5" exhaust out the cat. then remove the rear resonator for less back pressure, str8t into high flow single inlet/outlet muffler make sense, also anyone know of any performance mufflers that dont sound like a rattleing tin can?thanks.

The exhaust is very free flowing. Best you can do is ditch the cat and grab 7hp.

magnaflow, but as mentioned above, the exhaust already does flow well.
If you look in Performance Paddock Whipple M104 is making a Beautiful header for the M104. $$ would be better spent on a wide band O2 sensor and time/effort getting/making sure your mixture is Spot on across the board. Jonathan |
im checking into the o2 sensor,i recently stumbled upon that and it looks very interesting performance wise,i wanted to ditch the resonator due to 2 holes in it,i think i will go with a nice hollow cat to.thanks guys.

I've said it before and I will say it again, if you drive it on the street leave the catalyst in it. Unless you drive the car in the top 10% of the rev range all the time, you will see no benefit. If you do drive it in the top 10% you will see very little benefit. Regardless, all of the driving done without a catalyst will result in unacceptable amounts of emissions. Its on there for a reason and that reason is not to rob you of gobs of power.

from my experience back when i raced my car. slidding a 2" pipe thru the cat allowed for more flow,im undecided about it right now,id like to keep emmisions stable, but im def going to ditch that waste of steel resonator.then id like to install a stainless muffler with a nice twin tip.reason being the resonator is rotted out. i plan on removing the res and muff and replacing muffler with a stainless one and a stainless tip.does anyone have loud exhaust on there benz??

Hey, I'm all for performance. I have a fair bit of mods and I run 9lbs of boost on my daily driver 300TE 4-M. I also run two catalysts on the car. Would it have more power without them.... a little yes. Is that little bit worth turning a daily driver into a gross polluter... not in my opinion. It's a daily driver, not a race car. If you gut the catalyst on any driver, I assure you it wont be a race car. It will still only be a daily driver. Just one that I wouldn't want to be associated with the brand that I love.
Don't take it as a personal attack. I'd love to see your car with a nice custom exhaust and either the stock catalyst or possibly a nice high flowing aftermarket catalyst if you can tune the engine to take advantage of additional flow. With a near stock engine I'd be careful about going too large of diameter. It will drone like crazy, even with a catalyst. |
yeah its def a daily driver,im not racing this,im gonna keep it simple by ditching the resonator and having a link of pipe welded up in its place.thanks for all the input.
