Illuminated door sills

I just received my new illuminated door sills today for my '88 126 but I have a question about installation...

The instructions say that I need to hook them up to a 12V source, but does anybody know where I can find this in the cabin? Also, I need to get access to the door micro switch; can anybody tell me how to get to it? Any information would be very helpful!

Thanks

Peter

I've got the same instructions. I thought they were talking about the switch on the door jam. That's what is keeping me from putting them in.

Unfortunately I don't have the answer but where did you guys get these from? Do the 126 versions fit the SEL? Hope you guys get your answers soon.

Cheers
Matt.

I got mine from Ebay. I wanted the ones that said Mercedes Benz on them but they sent me the AMG ones instead. I guess I'll keep them because I'm slowly putting AMG stuff on my car.

Cool - do you have any pics? Do they both illuminate or just the front?

All 4 doors light on mine, but I have seen some on Ebay where only the 2 front doors light.

I don't have pics. I'll take some after I get them installed.

Hey Mattman !

If you or anybody else is interested on illuminated sill plates with the Mercedes Benz logo ( like the ones you can get from the dealer ) I have a good suorce fro them.

Price depends on the model of car ( sedan or coupe ) and if you like 2 or 4 of them illuminated.

To give you an idea I purchased mine for $ 220.00 shipped to Los Angeles, CA. That was for a set of 4 illuminated for a 300E W124.

The only problem is that you have to wait for them about 4 weeks to get them, because they came from Singapore.

When I was shopping for them at e-bay, the guys offering them told me that they were coming from outside the US also and could take up to 6 weeks to get them.

If you believe this is a fair price let me know and I can get you a set.

Craig, could you let us know how much do you pay for your set ?

Good luck !

Thanks Ernesto, I have the SEL which has a longer rear door so the sill plates need to be longer for the rear doors. I would like a set that suits the SEL with all lit with Mercedes Benz written on them. I also live in New Zealand so they will need to be shipped internationally.

Cheers
Matt.

Ok, I guess nobody knows how to do this so....

tomorrow after school I'll figure out how to install them, and for anybody else out there who wants info I'll take pictures and give step-by-step instructions.

wish me luck

oh, by the way, my sills fit all 126 sels but unfortunately only the front two light up. they cost me $220 from the guy on ebay.

instructions to come....

Strips for the SE will fit the SEL but they aren't long enough so the black plastic shows underneath - are yours full length?

Cheers
Matt.

Connections???

I haven't done this particular installation but I would assume one of the wire connections would go to a good vehicle body ground. You could find a established ground somewhere under the dash or on or near the firewall or drill a small hole in an inconspicuous solid body metal ( under something or behind a panel) and use a self tapping screw to connect one wire to the metal body. The other wire could be routed under/ behind trim work and into the door frame forward pillar. Remove a door switch and connect the second remaining wire to the wire that hot (has voltage at it) only when the door is open. The other wire going to the switch is the feed and is always hot. The door switch remains electrically open when the door is closed and electrically closes when the door is opened. The switch plunger is pushed in by the closing door to open the circut turning of the dome and underdoor courtesy lights. Alll you will need is a 12V circut tester (a wired bulb) and some type of splicing method. Crimps are quick and dirty and solder and heat shrink is the best. Good luck shouldn't take 10 minutes.

Matt - yes, i checked and the rear sills do cover all of the plastic. I'll send pictures of them tomorrow when I finish the installation.

Billybob:
you've got the idea right, but the instructions say to wire the ground to the door switch. I think I'll just end up running the wire through the stereo connections, but I'll have to see tomorrow.

Ernesto-

I bought mine from Ebay. They were shipped to my house via DHl (I think) and also came from Asia.

Oh, I paid $172.00. Guess I was lucky with my bid.

Did anyone here actually end up installing these? If so are there any pictures? I have a set of four illuminated strips that I want to install.

Cheers

Like Mattman - has anyone been able to get these installs done and take a picture or two? They would be great to see.

Also, how are these made? Are they plastic? Is there a replaceable bulb? How do they hold up to the werar and tear those puppies can get?

These look very interesting to me and I would like to pursue some if I can get answers to the basics.

Thanks
