Talk me out of this purchase - 6.9 w116

1977 Mercedes Benz 6.9 (M100)

Please talk me out of it. Say something like....the parts are much more expensive than normal or it is not a DIY kind of car.

BUY IT! You got the money, fix some more mowers and drive in style.

I'll buy it from you in a couple years

Then another road trip! and another story!

:D

read this thread-

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/108456-would-make-good-project.html

i repeat, 6.9s are more car than other 116s. if you won the lottery, go for it. otherwise, buy 1 that's been done already. good luck, chuck.

It's very nice, but since you ran away from your 560SL, this is a magnitude of expense/difficulty higher. And the market for these is nothing like R107s. No offense to you intended, but finding a "greater fool" for this ride a few months from now will be difficult, so choose wisely.....

What do you mean "greater fool?" Didn't you read my post above?

Besides. I would need something to work on in retirement, because ben's acquired all the used and broken lawn mowers in the US and Mexico...:D

In case you get second thoughts, read my reply to this one:

Go look at it. Tarheel football isn't that interesting this year.

6.9's are not particularly unreliable or complex. I've bought a few that sat a while and drove them daily with little effort. The M100 engine is like a giant M117 and the suspension is not too different to a diesel wagon's rear setup.

Of course, like any other MB, if you buy one that's a complete basket case then it will eat you alive.

Find one with a solid drive train (engine trans and rear end) and you could probably fix it up at reasonable cost.

Ben,
Follow Al's advice and buy it!
You will regret this later... I know!

I'll echo that....I'll follow this thread; if you don't buy it, I'm checking flights to the area lol.

TheHof 11-10-2011 03:52 PM

If it was closer, I'd go for it. But I have a feeling I would equate the thrill of buying a 6.9 to a long night of binge drinking with buddies. Only the morning after instead of rolling over in a daze and going "I had sex with YOU last night??!!" you look out at your driveway the next morning and go " I bought WHAAAAAT yesterday??!! ... NOOOOOOO!!"

But still, again if it was closer I'd give it a shot :D But then again, I also happen to LIKE fat chicks :P

it's all yours. I will even pick you up from the airport and take you to the car. I'd like to see it too.

Strelnik- why don't you buy it? You are due for another road trip aren't you?

I'd be just the opposite....I'd keep peeking in the garage and smiling :).
