Ah so 448 is the gear I was looking for. I'll get them ordered tomorrow from the dealer. Pulling a transmission from a local yard will take hours and its such a PIA having to pack all the needed tools etc...I cannot imagine the dealer can be too expensive for both those gears.
Once replaced, I will use a strong magnet and get the rear cover clean, then change the fluid and filter for any remaining metal shards that went into the transmission. Since it was a small issue, I'm not worried about anything left over. The filter will catch it if it hasn't already. Would you recommend I replace the rear bearing on the output shaft for good measure?

yes, I called it a seal, but you're right it's a bearing. You want to replace it so that theres no leaks later.

Wowzers...MB wants $68.40 + tax for Governor gear, and $104.40 for drive gear shipped from Germany (3 weeks).
Insanity!! I'm going to look elsewhere for that price. I can get a full used transmission for less than that!

Those prices are pretty extreme, even for MB. Especially when you consider they are both just little pieces of plastic. Something is wrong. First, I would try to call back again and see if you can get a different parts manager. I had much the same experience when I first called the dealer here. While its not rare for these parts to fail, if the sales person is not familiar with this repair, they can get it wrong. They are going to have diagrams, but the part numbers and descriptions may be different than what you have. If you can go down to the dealer yourself, that may be worth the time. That was what I had to do. Luckily when I got there the guy that helped me in person was better informed that the one on the phone. Needless to say the first guy was a bit defensive when it became clear he was clueless. Worse case, try another dealer, perhaps out of state. Maybe they can ship it to you.

Ya...I always just tell them the part #'s so it was right. I guess my area is heavily inflated prices at this stealer. Last time I get quotes from them going forward.
140 274 01 15 gov gear 140 274 00 15 main gear My local junkyard does $100-200 transmissions depending on where I go, so I'll decide which is a better idea. EDIT: 400-2 Transmission Rwd (Automatic) Car $95.99 $29.99 $125.9 $125....not bad.

Which car are you working on? I thought it was one of your 124's. Still, I can't imagine the parts being that much different in price on a 140. I will never curse my local dealship's prices again (yea right). Just for grins, I'm going to call Honolulu MB tomorrow and see what they say.

Nevermind, I see that the part number doesn't always correlate with the model number.

Wish I had better news. My local dealer is quoting similar pricing and availability. Was really hoping to be of more help. Good luck with your search.

Plan is to pull a complete used transmission in the next week or so.
This is for my 300TE fyi. Rest of my parts and gaskets arrived today. Got a new filter + gasket, output housing gasket, output bearing + cover and gov o-ring today. So just gotta get the governor/gears from the used tranny and should be ready to go. I figure I will just dump the used governor in. Any experiences on what a "bad" governor will act like? Worst case scenario, I remove the gear and put it on my "good" original governor.

If you need some pictures of assembly and disassembly I just finished removing all of the internals from the transmission on my 300SDL. I stopped after getting the rear cover off so the next thing I will be removing is the governor and pump. Let me know if I should take some pictures of each step. This is my first time so you probably have more experience than I do but I would like to try to help somehow. I am doing a complete rebuilt on my transmission.

Does the 30mm 12pt socket need to be deep or not for rear cover removal? Plan is to get it in the next few days. Just need to check on this?
