190E Brake Disc Replacement
 

I am preparing to replace the front discs on my 1991 190. The DIY section has a brake pad illustration for a different model.

Can someone help me determine what tools I will need, as well as a general DIY guide?

My current discs, replaced at TDS a year ago by previous owner, are warped.

MB rotors are usually bolted to the back side of a flange on the front hub. The older models I'm familiar with require a 14mm Hex driver (1/2" drive) to remove the bolts.

The hub must come off, so the calipers do, too.

You may in fact not have warped rotors -- if the PO didn't get the flange and rotor clean when they were installed, they could be crooked with excessive runout. I'd replace them anyway, as they are for sure worn funny by now.

By 14mm Hex driver -- you mean the "male" end of it, like an allen wrench?

The rotor bolts to the main hub that wheel bearings in it. Much cheaper that way. The bolts go in from the back, so it is hard to see them unless the wheel is off, in which case you will see the threaded end of five more bolts in the hub.

The hex driver is an Allen key in a holder that looks like a big socket. A 1/2" drive is all you will be able to get.

If the hub or rotor isn't clean at the mating surface, the rotor won't run true on the hub, but will "wobble" back and forth as if it were warped. This is run-out. The rotor sits on ledge, or flange, on the hub.
