I have a 96 300SDL and would like to know what's involved in changing the glow plugs.

You must mean a 96 E300 Diesel?
Procedure is to remove wiring, screw out old glow plugs, install new glow plugs, reinstall wiring.
Don't give in to the temptation to remove the intake manifold, this will create more work than simply bearing with the manifold in place. You may find it advantagious to remove the intake cross-over tube however.

ps Marv, unless you meant an 86 300SDL, in which case the previous recommendation still stands as far as how to do it, the cross-over tube doesn't matter on this one, it's just tough to get to the ones near the throttle linkage in the middle, and the rear one by the filter housing. Just takes practice and determination, you'll get it.

Thank you for your help. I did mean a 86 300SDL and somehow got the number wrong. I read that cleaning the intake manifold was a recommended procedure when changing the glow plugs - since it improved the engines performance. What do you think?

I've never cleaned out the intake other than when installing a reman engine. There is a special tool for reaming out the glow plug hole in the pre-chamber though. I only use it if the glow plugs are hard to remove after unscrewing.
The best tools to have available to do this job is a 10mm flexible socket, 1/4" drive for the nuts on the electrical harness, and a 12mm mid-deep socket (not shallow, not deep, the in-between depth, a 3/8" drive would probably be best, if you can find one that is a flex socket, that would be good, I get by with a universal joint attachment on mine.
If you are familiar with the throttle linkage on this car, you can disconnect the pivot that's near cyl #3 and drop it down out of the way, this makes things easier to get to on cyls 3&4.

I am in the process of changing the glopluggs on my 1992 300sd

i did remove the intake made my job easier but i find out the intake manifold was loaded with a lot of carbon which was too thich in side the manifold. I need to know why it is accumlating there seem like pulling alot of oil through this .any suggestions why it is happening or this is normal.please reply .

I want to thank you for helping me to get my 1986 300SDL working. Your advice was right on target. The glow plugs were replaced and the car seems to be cold starting quickly. The glow plug relay now lights as it should.
